I caught the new Comedy Central show last night, The Colbert Report. It was occasionally funny and frequently awkward. It doesn't work for all the reasons The Daily Show does. While the news is fake on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart is not. He delivers the punchlines with a droll giggle and an everyman wink. He's right there with you, enduring the same mind boggle over current events. Stephen Colbert plays a character on The Colbert Report. I don't see how this is going to work for any length of time, particularly the guest segments. It will get old quickly to see presumably "real" people, or at least real people filtered through a P.R. veil, interacting with a Bill O'Reilly impersonator. But then again, you'd think people would tire of seeing people attempt to interact with the real Bill O, and that hasn't happened yet.
