1) Do you observe Advent in your church?
Yup. I just scored a new Advent-purple "parament" at Target. Check out the table-runners in the Christmas section. It's the perfect size for hanging over our pulpit.
2) How about at home?
Hmmm. Theoretically. I'm not very good at observing anything, to be honest. I read A Light Blazes in the Darkness last year and plan to read our denominational booklet by General Minister & President Sharon Watkins (and husband, Rick Lowery) this year. It would be awfully nice to add a domestic Advent wreath to the mix.
3) Do you have a favorite Advent text or hymn?
O Come, O Come Emmanuel is my perennial favorite. And my favorite experience of singing it was in the Kent State University Gospel Choir. This year I found a new Advent song to appreciate: A Candle is Burning by Sandra Dean. It's in the hymnal of the United Church of Canada, but can also be found here. It's sung to the tune of Away in a Manger, but the words are all about Advent.
4) Why is one of the candles in the Advent wreath pink? (You may tell the truth, but I'll like your answer better if it's funny.)
Target only had three purple candles left, so the pastor planted her pink lipstick in the candleholder and hoped no one would notice.
5) What's the funniest/kitschiest Advent calendar you've ever seen?
I don't think I've seen any funny Advent calendars. Am I missing out?
